A 44-year-old teacher at Lely High School, Christopher D. Toukonen, has been arrested and booked into jail on felony charges after law enforcement discovered a mixture of fentanyl and cocaine in his backpack. The incident unfolded after school administrators were alerted to allegations of Toukonen using drugs in his classroom.
According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office (CCSO), detectives responded to the school after staff found suspected narcotics. The drugs, identified as a mixture of fentanyl and cocaine, were located in Toukonen's backpack within his classroom. He faces charges including possession of fentanyl, possession of cocaine, and possession of narcotic paraphernalia.
Lely High School Principal Jen Bledsoe confirmed the school's immediate response to the serious allegations. "Upon learning of the arrest, Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) immediately removed the employee from the classroom and initiated the termination process," Bledsoe stated. She added that "the matter is currently under criminal investigation, and the District is cooperating fully with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office."
Sheriff Kevin Rambosk commended the swift actions taken by school staff and deputies, stating, "Thanks to the swift actions of school staff and our deputies and detectives, this situation was addressed immediately." Authorities confirmed no students were present in the classroom when the narcotics were discovered. A subsequent search of Toukonen's classroom and vehicle on campus did not yield additional drugs.
Toukonen previously served as the head football coach at Palmetto Ridge High School for seven seasons, from 2015 to 2021, achieving a 40-30 record. His coaching tenure concluded following a suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct. The investigation into the current drug charges is ongoing.
