San Diego, CA – Miguel Hernandez, 35, is scheduled to appear in court on July 30 to face four felony arson counts, stemming from an incident in Spring Valley where he allegedly set a palm tree on fire. His apprehension on May 25 was significantly aided by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office's Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Program, which utilized drones to track his movements. The incident prompted temporary evacuations as the fire threatened nearby homes.

Hernandez was arrested near the interchange of State Routes 125 and 54 shortly after the fire was reported. The Sheriff's UAS Program, which has expanded to include over 60 certified remote pilots and 70 aircraft since 2016, played a critical role in locating the suspect in a riverbed and relaying real-time information to ground deputies and an ASTREA helicopter. This highlights the growing integration of drone technology in local law enforcement operations.

Beyond the arson charges, Hernandez is also facing separate legal proceedings for stolen identification, fraud, and drug charges in another part of San Diego County. He is slated to appear in a different courthouse for that case on August 8. This indicates a broader pattern of alleged criminal activity.

Currently, Hernandez remains in custody, with his bail set at $100,000. The mention of @DHSgov and @EROSanDiego in the original social media post by Eva Knott suggests potential involvement of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in San Diego, often indicating that an individual in custody may have immigration implications in addition to their criminal charges. ERO is responsible for identifying, arresting, and removing noncitizens who pose a threat to national security, public safety, or border security.
