It starts with a small twinge in your back.

You ignore it.

Maybe it's the chair. Maybe it's the long drive. Maybe it's the gym.

Then one night… it hits.

A pain so sharp it folds you in half. Burning urination. A streak of blood. Cold sweat at 2 AM.

Congratulations.

You just met a kidney stone. 🪨

☀️ Why summer is silently making it worse

Dr. Sarbjit Mohapatra, urologist at Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar, says the math is brutally simple.

More sweat. Less water. Concentrated urine. Crystals stick. Stones form.

And India is the perfect storm — roughly 12% of Indians are prone to urinary stones, with the "stone belt" across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab and Haryana getting hammered every summer.

Long commutes. Salty street snacks. Chai instead of water. Skipped bathroom breaks.

We're basically manufacturing stones on autopilot.

⚠️ The signs you're brushing off

Kidney stones are sneaky. They grow in silence — until they move.

Watch for:

  • 🔥 Pain in your side or back that radiates to the groin
  • 💧 Burning while urinating
  • 🩸 Pink, red or brown urine
  • 🤢 Nausea, vomiting, frequent peeing
  • 🌡️ Fever with chills (this one is an emergency)

And the don't-mess-around combo:

fever + pain + reduced urine output + vomiting that won't quit + painkillers that don't work.

That's an ER trip. Not a YouTube remedy.

🚨 The risk profile nobody warns you about

You're more vulnerable if you tick any of these:

  • Low water intake (the #1 culprit)
  • High-salt diet — chips, papad, pickles, fast food
  • Heavy red meat and organ meat habit
  • Recurrent UTIs
  • Family history
  • Obesity or metabolic syndrome
  • Unsupervised calcium or vitamin C supplements
  • Gout, hyperparathyroidism

💧 The water hack most people get wrong

Here's the twist: it's not how much you drink. It's when.

Dr. Mohapatra's daily blueprint:

  • 🌅 Morning: 500 ml
  • 🚪 Before leaving home: 500 ml
  • 💼 Work hours: 1 to 1.5 L
  • 🌇 Evening: 500–700 ml
  • 🌙 Before bed: a small sip

Spread it out. Don't chug a bottle at 9 PM and call it hydration.

🍋 The myths that need to die

👉 Cutting all calcium will save you. Wrong. Low dietary calcium makes your body absorb MORE oxalate. The stones love that.

👉 Lemon water dissolves stones. Citrate helps. It doesn't perform miracles. Skip the sugar.

👉 The pain stopped, so the stone passed. Not necessarily. Pain fades. Stones stay. Get a follow-up scan.

⚡ The real lesson hiding in all this:

Your kidneys don't shout. They whisper.

And this summer, the cheapest medicine in the country is sitting in your glass.

That's all for now!
