Moms for Liberty, a conservative parental rights organization, has faced a series of significant challenges within a nine-month period, including being labeled an "extremist group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), experiencing a cyberattack, and encountering financial and social media restrictions. Tina Descovich, co-founder of Moms for Liberty, described these events as "All very coordinated," in a recent social media post. She highlighted the organization's addition to the SPLC's "hate map," a global cyberattack, PayPal freezing funds, and Facebook shutting down chapter groups.
The Southern Poverty Law Center officially designated Moms for Liberty as an "extremist group" in June 2023, citing the organization's anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and efforts to ban books from school libraries. This designation placed the group on the SPLC's annual "hate map," a move Moms for Liberty has vehemently rejected as a politically motivated attack aimed at silencing parental advocacy. The organization maintains its focus is on parental rights in education.
In June 2023, the hacktivist group Anonymous claimed responsibility for a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack and data leak targeting Moms for Liberty's website. This cyberattack coincided with the group's national summit in Philadelphia and resulted in the temporary disruption of their online presence and the alleged exposure of internal documents. The incident added to the operational hurdles faced by the organization.
Moms for Liberty also encountered financial and social media difficulties, with PayPal reportedly freezing its account in 2022 for a period, citing violations of its acceptable use policy. Additionally, Facebook has, at times, removed or restricted various Moms for Liberty chapter groups, citing violations of its community standards, particularly concerning hate speech or misinformation policies. These actions have impacted the group's ability to organize and fundraise online.
The organization's events have frequently drawn protests, with Descovich's tweet mentioning "> 1,000 of protesters at our events, threats, doxxing and more." These public demonstrations often highlight opposition to Moms for Liberty's stances on curriculum, LGBTQ+ rights, and parental involvement in schools. The group has consistently reported instances of doxxing and threats against its members and leadership.
Tina Descovich further alleged in her post, "> Not to mention the role the previous admin DOJ and FBI played in it too." While the tweet suggests involvement from the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation under a previous administration, public reports have not broadly confirmed direct, coordinated actions by these agencies specifically targeting Moms for Liberty in the manner described. Discussions around parental rights groups and school board meetings did garner federal attention during that period, but specific allegations of a coordinated campaign against Moms for Liberty by these agencies remain largely unverified in public records.
