Biologist Marie Dacke and her team at Lund University cracked this one open β and it rewrote what we thought insects were capable of.
The African dung beetle (Scarabaeus satyrus) became the first animal ever documented using our galaxy's band of starlight to navigate.

They were locking onto the bright smear of the Milky Way itself β using it as one giant celestial stripe to walk along.
A navigation trick humans only mastered with telescopes, sextants, and centuries of math.
This bug figured it out with a brain smaller than a grain of rice.
We tend to think intelligence scales with size.
