
Ahmedabad looks solid on paper.
But underneath the city⦠the ground tells a very different story.
A new study just dropped in the Geosciences Journal by Springer.
Scientists from ISR Gandhinagar, UPES Dehradun and UTM dug through 1,288 earthquakes from the last 350 years.
And the number staring back at Ahmedabad isn't the scary part.
The soil is.
Ahmedabad's projected peak ground acceleration? A calm-looking 0.05g to 0.08g.
Gandhinagar sits at similar levels.
Nothing to worry about, right?
Wrong.
Anything above 0.1g can damage buildings.
But here's the twist scientists are shouting about:
π Those numbers are for bedrock.
Ahmedabad isn't sitting on bedrock. It's sitting on soft sedimentary soil that amplifies shaking like a subwoofer.
Kutch gets hit by the big one.
Ahmedabad gets hit by something sneakier β near-field moderate quakes from the local Cambay Rift faults running right under the region.
Smaller magnitude.
Closer to home.
And landing on soil that shakes harder than it should.
That's exactly the cocktail that flattened parts of the city in 2001, even though the epicentre was 300+ km away in Bhuj.
The difference wasn't luck. It was the ground beneath them.
For decades, Gujarat was treated like one big seismic blob.
The new study slices it into 7 distinct seismogenic zones:
And Kutch, brace yourself, could see a PGA of 0.57g at the surface in a strong quake.
That's Bhuj 2001 territory. Again.
Thursday's Venezuela quake reopened old wounds in Gujarat.
And the researchers aren't mincing words:
Broad national zoning maps aren't good enough anymore.
Prof Sumer Chopra, former ISR director, put it bluntly β critical Ahmedabad structures must be built for actual local hazard, not generic zones.
AMC insists every post-2001 building is designed by certified structural engineers.
But the older stock? Industrial clusters? High-rises on soft soil?
Those need a second look. Fast.
Because in Ahmedabad, the earthquake risk isn't in the sky.
It's in the dirt beneath your feet.
