
Picture this.
A rock from space slams into what is now the Australian outback.
The sky burns. The ground melts.
And then⦠silence for 3 billion years.
Nobody around to witness it. No dinosaurs. No fish. Barely even oxygen in the atmosphere.
Just Earth, freshly bruised, holding onto the scar.
It's called the North Pole Dome β or the Miralga crater β buried in Western Australia's Pilbara region.
Up to 100 km wide.
Marked by shatter cones β weird, fan-shaped rock patterns that only form when something hits Earth really, really hard. π₯
First flagged in 2025 by a Curtin University team led by geologist Chris Kirkland.
Kirkland's first claim was bold: the crater was 3.47 billion years old.
That would have made it the oldest impact site ever found on Earth β by a huge margin.
The problem?
He wasn't dating the impact itself. He was dating the rocks around it.
A rival team, led by Aaron Cavosie, called foul. Their counter-claim: the crater might be younger than 2.77 billion years. Maybe a lot younger.
Cue the geology world's most patient slap-fight.
This week, Kirkland's team came back with receipts.
They used uranium-lead dating β the gold standard β on two minerals trapped inside the impact rocks themselves:
Both pointed to the same number.
3.02 billion years.
Not 3.47. Not 2.77. Somewhere in the middle β but still old enough to crown it Earth's oldest confirmed impact crater. π
Cavosie isn't backing down.
His argument: shatter cones also pop up in younger rocks nearby. Which means the impact had to happen after those rocks formed.
So the debate continues.
