
Earth just got a report card. And it's flunking in a way scientists didn't see coming.
Since 2000, the planet's energy imbalance — the gap between sunlight absorbed and heat released back to space — has more than doubled.
Translation: Earth is trapping heat faster than our best climate models ever predicted.
Here's the twist nobody saw coming.
It's not (just) greenhouse gases doing this.
It's cleaner air.
Since the late 1990s, NASA's CERES satellites have been doing planetary book-keeping — measuring sunlight in, heat out.
The verdict, confirmed independently by thousands of ocean-drifting Argo floats:
Stricter sulphur rules on ships and power plants have scrubbed toxic aerosols from our skies.
Great news for lungs.
Bad news for the climate.
Those aerosols were accidentally reflecting sunlight back to space.
Remove them, and Earth gets darker — soaking up more heat.
Since 2020 shipping rules alone, global sulphur emissions dropped from 81 million tonnes to 69 million.
Researchers estimate that single move erased more cooling than any CO2 policy has added.
Sit with that for a second.
Climate models simply can't reproduce what satellites are seeing.
ETH Zurich's Reto Knutti puts near-term warming at 10% to 30% higher than current forecasts assume.
Veteran climatologist James Hansen goes further — he pegs warming at 0.4°C per decade, not the official 0.27°C.
On his math, the world blows past the Paris Agreement's 2°C limit by the end of the 2030s.
Scientists gathered at a Bavarian castle this year to debate the cause: miscalculated aerosol cooling, misunderstood clouds, or ocean-warming patterns models can't capture.
No consensus yet.
Just one uncomfortable line from researcher Maria Rugenstein:
"What the last 25 years actually tell us about the next 25 years is open. And that's embarrassing as a field."
The planet is dimming.
And the models meant to warn us may already be behind the curve.
