An international team just published fresh findings in Nature Human Behaviour.

They analysed the DNA of nearly 80,000 infants across British and European cohorts.

The question was simple:

Why do some toddlers move constantly… and others don't?

The answer? 10% of that variation comes down to specific genetic markers.

Not parenting. Not sugar. Not screen time.

Just biology.


🤯 But here's the twist that stopped researchers cold

Those same genetic markers…

are the ones linked to ADHD later in life.

The wiggly toddler and the teenager who can't sit through class?

Often running on the same genetic code.

One gene in particular stood out: RHEBL1.

Variations in it were tied to:

  • 🧠 How active the gene is in the brain's cortex

  • 🏃 How much a 12-to-36-month-old moves around

  • ⚡ How likely ADHD shows up years later


🎯 Why this actually matters

Right now, ADHD is usually diagnosed in mid-childhood.

Sometimes as late as adulthood.

Meanwhile, globally, around 8% of kids live with it — and in the US, that number climbs past 11%.

That's a lot of children waiting years for a name for what they're feeling.

Lead author Angelica Ronald of the University of Surrey put it plainly:

For the first time, we've identified the genetic variation behind these early behavioural traits.

First author Anja Hollowell added the human beat:

Earlier identification would be very helpful for providing timely support to children and their families.

For decades, toddler behaviour was framed as nurture.
