Well, scientists just put a number on what that habit is doing to their brain.
Researchers at the University of Bayreuth in Germany ran one of the biggest deep-dives yet into short-form video and the teenage brain.
The scale is wild:
The verdict is not pretty.
The study drew a clear line in the sand.
Heavy use = 4+ hours a day of short videos.
Here's the uncomfortable part.
Teens globally already average around 4.8 hours a day on social media. Most of that? Reels, Shorts, TikToks.
Meaning⦠the "heavy use" group isn't a fringe minority anymore.
It's basically the default.
When teens crossed that 4-hour threshold, researchers spotted:
And this held up after adjusting for age, gender, country, culture, education and platform.
In other words β it's not just "kids these days."
It's the format itself.
The researchers pinpointed three design tricks doing the damage:
π Rapid content delivery β a new dopamine hit every few seconds, training the brain to crave novelty and hate stillness.
π Endless scrolling β no stop signs, no natural breaks, no moment to think "maybe I should close this."
π Hyper-personalised algorithms β feeds that know you better than your friends do, creating an almost emotional attachment to the app.
It's not weak willpower.
It's an engineered trap.
More than a quarter of TikTok users in 2023 were aged 13 to 17. Despite the platform's own age rules.
These are developing brains. Memory, focus, impulse control β all still being wired.
And the fast-cut, infinite-scroll loop appears to be quietly rewriting that wiring.
The researchers didn't say "ban phones."
They said something more doable:
Small structure. Big neurological payoff.
