Most people throw mushroom waste away.

Goa's scientists just decided to feed it to rice fields instead.

Here's the setup.

Every time a mushroom farmer harvests a crop, they're left with mountains of spent substrate โ€” the soggy, used-up growing medium the mushrooms fed on.

Usually? It's a disposal headache.

But researchers at ICAR-CCARI, Old Goa think it might be one of the most underrated fertilisers hiding in plain sight.


๐Ÿงช The experiment quietly being set up in Goa

ICAR-CCARI has just signed an MoA with Zycon ReNew Energy Pvt Ltd to run a contract research project with a mouthful of a title:

"Evaluation of Spent Mushroom Substrate Organic Manure (SMSOM) to Improve Productivity and Soil Health in Rice and Vegetable Crops."

Translation: can mushroom leftovers grow better rice and veggies than chemical fertiliser?

Spent mushroom substrate is already known to do interesting things to soil:

  • ๐Ÿฆ  Boosts microbial activity โ€” even when nitrate levels look similar to regular soil

  • ๐Ÿงฑ Improves soil structure and water retention

  • ๐ŸŒพ Feeds slow-release nutrients back into the earth

  • โ™ป๏ธ Turns a waste stream into a working input

What Goa's team wants to nail down: how well does it actually perform in real coastal paddy fields and vegetable plots โ€” where salty air, heavy monsoons, and tired soils make farming brutal.


๐Ÿ’ธ The bigger play: cutting India's chemical fertiliser habit

India leans heavily on urea and DAP.

The soil is tired. The subsidy bill is enormous. The runoff is poisoning waterways.

Director Parveen Kumar framed the project as part of ICAR's Khet Bachao Abhiyaan โ€” the national push to restore soil health and rebalance fertiliser use.

Meanwhile, Zycon's director Sangam Kurade called it what it really is:

Sometimes the future of agriculture doesn't arrive in a tractor.

It arrives in a pile of used-up mushroom compost.
