At ICMR's Centre for Advanced Research in Bengaluru, three healthy volunteers tilted their beds 6 degrees, heads lower than feet, and stayed like that for seven straight days.
No standing.
No walking.
No relief.
Just gravity slowly pulling blood toward their skulls, exactly like it would in orbit.
Because space does terrible things to the human body.
And scientists needed a way to study it… without launching anyone into space.
Enter the Head-Down Bed Rest study — a technique NASA and ESA have trusted for decades.
Sound familiar? It should.
That's almost exactly what happens to astronauts floating in microgravity.
This isn't research for research's sake.
India is gearing up to send its own astronauts to space under Gaganyaan — and eventually keep them there longer, aboard the planned Bharatiya Antariksh Station.
Before any human sits in that capsule, ISRO and ICMR need answers to hard questions:
👉 How fast does the body deteriorate up there?
👉 What countermeasures actually work?
👉 How do you bring someone back safely — mind and body intact?
This study was done in collaboration with NIMHANS, blending physiology, psychology and aerospace science — a field barely explored in India until now.
Even India's own astronaut-designate for the Axiom mission, Shubhanshu Shukla, dropped by to witness it firsthand.
That's how seriously this is being taken.
Space doesn't care how advanced your rocket is.
It will still mess with your fluids, your muscles, your balance, your mind.
The only defense? Preparation on Earth, before liftoff.
Three volunteers just lay down for a week — so future Indian astronauts can stand tall in orbit.
