Four private astronauts just did something no human has ever done — they X-rayed their own bodies while orbiting Earth.

No hospital.

No ground support.

Just a portable machine and four hours of training.

This happened on SpaceX's Fram2 mission — a 3.5-day polar orbital flight — and the results just landed in the journal Radiology.

🩻 Why this was considered impossible

For over 40 years, astronauts had exactly one imaging tool in space: ultrasound.

It works. But it's brutal to rely on.

  • 🎯 Highly operator-dependent — one wrong angle, useless scan
  • 🚫 Can't work without a sound-transmitting medium

X-rays were the dream. But traditional machines are heavy, radiation-heavy, and blur if anything moves.

And in microgravity? Everything moves.


🚀 So how did they pull it off

Dr. Sheyna Gifford of Mayo Clinic bet on something almost embarrassingly simple: the same off-the-shelf portable X-ray units used courtside at the Super Bowl and at the Kentucky Derby.

No medical background needed to run them.

Solar-powered. Lightweight. Built for chaos.

The crew scanned a calibration phantom, a smartwatch, then their own hand, forearm, abdomen, pelvis and chest — with zero ground support.


🤯 The verdict from three radiologists

They compared the in-flight scans to identical pre- and post-flight images.

👉 Every single in-flight X-ray hit clinical diagnostic quality.

Central body areas were trickier without gravity to anchor the patient — but resolution and contrast held up.

"Acquiring diagnostically useful X-rays in space is something anyone can do," Gifford said.

Three non-medical crew members. Four hours of training. One of the harshest environments imaginable.

And they nailed it.
