While the city dreams between 10pm and 7am, a silent convoy rolls in.
17,000 interstate trucks. Every single night.
And they're doing something wild to Delhi's lungs.
A new study by A-PAG, IIT Delhi and TERI just dropped a number that should stop you mid-scroll.
These outstation trucks — only allowed in for 8 night hours — are responsible for 23% of all transport PM2.5 emissions in Delhi.
At night, it gets darker. Literally.
👉 Between 10pm and 7am, heavy trucks pump out 61% of transport pollution.
👉 75% of vehicles on Delhi roads at night? Interstate trucks.
👉 Only 18% are passenger cars.
The city you wake up to has been marinating in diesel exhaust for 9 hours.
Every single day, these trucks dump into Delhi's air:
Annually? 19 tonnes of PM2.5 and over 1,095 tonnes of NOx.
And here's the kicker — the old guys are doing most of the damage.
Only 10% of trucks are BS-III or older. But pre-BS-VI trucks alone cause 62% of the freight pollution.
We always blamed long-haul transit trucks passing through Delhi.
Turns out — they're not the villain.
Delhi isn't a highway. It's a consumption black hole.
Researchers found that just 4 toll points — Kundli, Rajokri, Badarpur, Tikri — handle over half of all incoming trucks.
Guard those gates, and you control the pollution faucet.
And the single biggest lever?
Ban pre-BS-VI trucks by 2027.
One policy. 51% cut in interstate truck PM2.5. Done.
Delhi's winter AQI has crossed severe-plus 490+ in recent seasons. Schools shut. Flights diverted. Lungs scarred.
And we kept pointing at stubble burning, firecrackers, construction dust.
Meanwhile, 17,000 diesel ghosts were rolling in every night… while we slept.
As TERI's Dr Anju Goel put it — freight doesn't respect city boundaries.
Neither does the smog it leaves behind.
