🛸 Meet the space plane nobody's talking about enough

Isro's Reusable Launch Vehicle isn't trying to out-SpaceX SpaceX.

It's building something stranger — and in some ways, harder.

No landing burn.

No vertical touchdown.

Just wings, a rudder, and pure aerodynamics bringing it down onto a runway at 350 km/h.

Think scaled-down Space Shuttle. Think glider, not rocket.


🧗 How they got here — the quiet decade

This didn't happen overnight. Isro has been chipping away since 2010.

  • 🚀 2016: RLV-TD hit Mach 5, glided toward a hypothetical runway over the Bay of Bengal — no actual landing attempted
  • 🚁 2023: A Chinook helicopter dropped the winged vehicle from 4.5 km — it landed itself, autonomously, on a real runway
  • 🎯 2024: Isro deliberately released it off-course, sideways and all — it corrected mid-air and stuck the landing anyway

Same airframe, reused and recertified for the tougher test.

That's the reusability story hiding inside the reusability story.


🌍 So who's actually winning this race?

  • 🇺🇸 SpaceX: recovering Falcon 9 boosters routinely for a decade
  • 🇨🇳 China: just became only the third entity ever to pull off an intact orbital-class booster recovery
  • 🇮🇳 India: hasn't attempted an orbital-class recovery yet — the next milestone, an orbital re-entry experiment, has no confirmed date

Isro chairperson V. Narayanan was asked, point blank, if this was a race against Musk.

His answer: "We don't consider this as competition with anybody."

No timeline. No hype. Just quiet engineering — while PSLV, its workhorse rocket, was recovering from back-to-back failures.

Slow build. Different route. Same destination.

The sky doesn't care how you land — only that you do.
