He nods. Then plants them shoulder-to-shoulder anyway.

Because spacing means lower yield. And lower yield means his family eats less.
Textbook science just lost to lived reality.
That's the exact tension Commissioner of Sericulture Shilpa Nag brought to the EntoNext 2026 stage in Mysuru this week.
Her message to researchers was blunt:
👉 Stop designing for ideal farms. Start designing for the farms we actually have.
The numbers tell the story:
So every square metre of mulberry land is doing serious national heavy-lifting.
That was her line. And it sums up the whole pivot.
Less land. Less water. Smarter science.
She pushed researchers toward a very specific wishlist:
Because right now, too many lab innovations die on the lab bench.
S. Manthira Moorthy, Director (Tech) at the Central Silk Board, dropped a quiet bombshell on the same stage.
El Niño, he said, could trigger a pest outbreak that hits the sericulture industry hard.
A weather pattern thousands of kilometres away… messing with a silkworm in a Karnataka shed.
That's how fragile this chain has become.
Nag's other point cut even deeper.
Subsidies, she said, are a short-term crutch. Not a strategy.
The real goal? Economic stability. Export muscle. Vanya silks — Eri, Muga, Tasar — woven in alongside mulberry. Environment-controlled rearing sheds being planned with the Central Silk Board.
The ask is simple but radical:
Build science around the farmer. Not the other way around.
Because in a country where a silk empire sits on plots smaller than a football field, the future of sericulture won't be won in a lab.
It'll be won in that one cramped hectare in Chikkaballapur.
