₹75 lakh. Three years. One invisible enemy.

Actually — two.

Arsenic. And fluoride.

Both tasteless. Both odourless. Both already swimming through the groundwater of the Ganga-Gomti Doab.


🧪 The grant that just dropped

Two faculty members at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) have just bagged a research grant from the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF).

The leads:

  • 🧠 Prof Narendra Kumar — Environmental Science
  • 🧬 Monica — Biotechnology

Their job over the next three years?

Map exactly where arsenic and fluoride are hiding in the groundwater across the Ganga-Gomti belt of Uttar Pradesh.


🌊 Why this actually matters

This isn't an academic exercise.

Out of UP's 166 million people, roughly 3 million are already exposed to arsenic levels above the WHO safety limit.

And arsenic doesn't knock politely.

It shows up as:

  • 🩹 skin lesions
  • 🫁 lung and bladder cancers
  • 🧠 developmental issues in kids

Fluoride? It quietly bends bones and rots teeth — a condition called fluorosis.

Across India, arsenic has now been flagged in parts of 221 districts across 25 states and UTs.

This is not a niche problem. It's a national one.


🎯 What the team is actually going to do

Not just collect water samples and call it a day.

The project will:

  • 📍 Map where contamination is concentrated
  • 🔍 Track how arsenic and fluoride behave underground
  • 🧭 Identify the original sources
  • 🛠️ Design sustainable mitigation strategies that governments can actually deploy

In other words — turn a vague threat into a precise, fixable problem.
