
A rocky planet, 49 light-years away, is leaking gas into space right now β and scientists just proved it.
Meet LHS 1140b.
A world bigger than Earth, sitting inside its star's habitable zone.
And for the first time ever, astronomers have confirmed it has an atmosphere.

Gas giants? Easy. Their atmospheres are huge and loud, signal-wise.
Rocky planets? Nearly impossible to detect from 49 light-years out.
But in 2024, using the Magellan Clay telescope in Chile, researchers spotted something escaping LHS 1140b's upper atmosphere.
π Helium.
About 220 tons of it β every single second.
That escaping gas was the smoking gun. It meant there's an atmosphere up there to leak from in the first place.
Before you picture a cousin of Earth, pump the brakes.
Red dwarfs usually fling out flares strong enough to strip a planet bare.
LHS 1140b's star, though, is unusually calm.
That's the whole reason this planet still has air to lose.
Here's the part that stopped researchers cold.
When they looked again in 2025 β the escaping helium was gone.
No signal. Silence.
Which means the atmosphere itself may be changing over time β the first time atmospheric change has ever been caught on a rocky exoplanet.
Is it a steady atmosphere that ebbs and flows, like Earth's? Or a bare rock occasionally burping gas that instantly vanishes?
Nobody knows yet.
To be crystal clear: no life has been detected. Not even close.
But LHS 1140b just became one of the most promising targets in the search for habitable worlds β because it proved something scientists have been chasing for years:
a small, rocky planet can hold onto its atmosphere.
JWST is expected to keep watching this planet over the next four to five years, hunting specifically for water vapor.
