A team led by Dr. Tobermory Mackay-Champion at the University of Oxford went digging through data from NASA's InSight lander — the little robot that plopped the first seismometer onto Mars back in 2018.

And those tremors just cracked open a billion-year-old secret.


🌋 The rock recipe game

Here's the clever part.

The team didn't just look at the data. They cooked up hundreds of possible Martian rock recipes, calculated how fast seismic waves should travel through each one, then matched them against what InSight actually recorded.

The results were wild:

  • 🪨 Above 15 miles down → 86% chance it's basalt (normal Mars stuff)
  • ⚡ Below that → 91% chance it's ultramafic (dense, iron-rich, magma-born)
  • 📏 A 9-mile-thick slab of crystallized magma sitting quietly at the base of the crust

This isn't ordinary layering.

This is what happens when magma pools, sits, and slowly cools — heavy crystals sinking, lighter melt rising up through the crust.

Geologists have a name for it: transcrustal magmatism.


🤯 The part that breaks the textbooks

On Earth, systems like this power our biggest volcano chains. They build continents. They recycle carbon. They keep the climate livable for billions of years.

And every textbook said the same thing:

You need plate tectonics to make this work.

Mars has none. Never did.

Yet somehow, it built one anyway.

Here's where it gets spicy.

These deep magma systems are exactly the machinery that helps a planet:

  • 💧 Hold onto water
  • 🌡️ Stay warm long enough for life to get a foothold

And if Mars pulled it off without plates… the recipe for a habitable world might be way more common than we thought.

"Mars could sustain large, long-lived systems where molten rock evolved and reprocessed itself throughout the entire crust," said Mackay-Champion.

For decades, the search for life zoomed in on Earth-like planets with Earth-like plumbing.

This discovery quietly flips that.

The smaller, quieter, "boring" worlds we ignored?

They might be hiding entire chapters of geological history beneath their skin.
