Imagine building a giant bathtub for water that was never actually there.
That's Glen Canyon Dam.
And scientists are now saying the quiet part out loud:
Drain it.
Here's the story nobody saw coming on the Colorado River.
Back when engineers designed Glen Canyon Dam, they assumed the Colorado River would carry a certain amount of water every year.
They were wrong.
📉 River flows have dropped ~20% since 2000.
That's not a bad year. That's two and a half decades of decline.
The river simply can't fill the bathtub it was promised to fill.
Lake Powell is reported to be 23% full.
Sounds bad already, right?
Here's the twist: it's actually worse.
👉 About 6 million acre-feet of water sitting in that lake can't even be released.
Why? The dam has no low-level outlet.
So a huge chunk of "available" water is basically trapped, doing nothing for the 40 million people who depend on this river.
Scientists at the Glen Canyon Institute have a radical idea:
Not demolition. Not abandonment.
Just... retirement from its original job.
Programme director Zanna Stutts didn't mince words:
"If we have the courage to take a step back and think about why Glen Canyon Dam was built... is that still working? The answer is no."
Earlier this year, the Bureau of Reclamation already had to send emergency water from the Flaming Gorge Reservoir just to keep Powell alive.
Stutts calls it what it really is:
"Reservoir triage."
A patch job. Not a plan.
Because since 1968, Congress has legally required Powell and Mead to be managed together.
The Bureau of Reclamation insists Powell still matters — for water supply, hydropower, and infrastructure.
But here's the quiet admission hiding in that statement:
Falling water levels are already threatening the dam's ability to make electricity.
The hydropower argument is drying up along with the reservoir.
This isn't really about one dam.
It's about whether infrastructure built for a wetter world can survive a drier one.
40 million people. 5 million acres of farmland. One shrinking river.
Someone has to decide: keep protecting the bathtub, or start protecting the water.
