Terraformation, a global reforestation company, highlights its $25 monthly subscription program aimed at planting and monitoring native trees in critical ecosystems. The initiative, promoted in the lead-up to Earth Day, emphasizes a comprehensive approach to reforestation that extends beyond initial planting to include years of dedicated care. The company stated in a recent tweet, "Earth Day is Wednesday. The trees don't know that. They just grow. $25 a month plants one in a native ecosystem, with years of monitoring behind it."
The $25 monthly contribution is designed to cover the full lifecycle of forest restoration, from seed collection and propagation in nurseries to planting, monitoring, and long-term care. This contrasts with cheaper tree-planting initiatives, which often only cover the initial cost of a sapling. Terraformation, founded by former Reddit CEO Yishan Wong, aims to ensure each tree thrives as part of a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem, particularly in endangered regions like Hawaiʻi.
Terraformation's broader mission is to accelerate large-scale native forest restoration to stabilize the climate and boost biodiversity, with an ambitious goal to restore a trillion trees within a decade. The company supports 68 forestry projects across 18 countries, having planted over 4.7 million biodiverse and native trees and stored 139 million seeds. Their approach focuses on equipping local forestry teams with training, technology, and access to capital.
The reforestation efforts prioritize native species, which are crucial for restoring ecological balance, safeguarding freshwater, and creating more resilient global ecosystems. Terraformation's innovative tools, such as the Terraware platform and the Seed to Carbon Forest Accelerator, provide essential support for managing and scaling these complex projects. These programs address critical gaps in funding, technology, and skills to ensure high-integrity reforestation outcomes.
