Terzan 5 lives deep inside the galactic bulge — a region so choked with dust that visible light just… stops.

For decades, nobody could see clearly enough.

Then the dream team showed up:

  • 🌠 Webb sliced through the dust with infrared vision
  • Hubble spent 12 years tracking how stars actually move

Webb gave clarity. Hubble gave certainty.

Together, they did what neither could alone.


🚀 Why this rewrites the textbook

Cosmologists always theorized galaxies built their cores from primordial clumps that merged and lost themselves forever.

Terzan 5 is the one that got away.

Principal investigator Francesco Ferraro put it simply: for some reason, this peculiar clump formed separately… and was never destroyed.

Only two of these fossils have ever been identified — Terzan 5 and Liller 1.

Ferraro's team is now scanning 40 to 50 more candidates inside the bulge.
