The engine of the state's economy⦠is also the engine of its emissions.
Across the Indo-Gangetic Plains, industries cough up roughly 4.5 lakh tonnes of black carbon every year.
Uttar Pradesh leads with a brutal 1,86,449 tonnes.
Bengal sits at #2.
Second place has never felt worse.
Because it's not just "pollution."
It's a climate weapon.
π It traps solar heat far more aggressively than COβ.
π It settles on Himalayan snow, darkens the surface, and speeds up glacier melt.
One study in the central Himalayas found black carbon was responsible for nearly 39% of glacier mass loss during the pre-monsoon window.
Let that land.
The soot from a Bengal foundry can end up helping melt the glacier feeding the Ganga.
No standardised monitoring.
No dedicated policy framework.
Not even a spot for black carbon in the Ambient Air Quality Monitoring System.
"One of the most overlooked pollutants in India's environmental governance," said Nivit Kumar Yadav of CSE.
And global models? Useless here.
Their estimates for the region swing from 1.3 lakh to 8.4 lakh tonnes β a range so wide it's basically a shrug.
