
A river doesn't just disappear.
It gets squeezed, drain by drain, barrage by barrage, until one day it can't breathe anymore.
That's the story of the Yamuna in Delhi.
A new study just mapped 225 years of its life β starting from a 1799 archival map β and the numbers are brutal.
In 1799, before a single barrage existed, the Yamuna in Delhi was 658 metres wide on average.
Today?
210 metres.
That's a 68% shrink.
And width isn't even the scary part.
π Discharge β the actual volume of water flowing through β fell from 30,000 cubic metres per second to just 3,900.
That's an 89% collapse.
Same river. Same monsoon. A fraction of the muscle.
Researchers from Delhi University and IISER Bhopal say this wasn't erosion or climate drift.
It was us.
Each one diverted water upstream.
Each one boxed the river in a little tighter.
Meanwhile, Delhi's population exploded β from 2.5 lakh in the early 1800s to nearly 2.15 crore today.
A city holding 1.5% of India's population on just 0.05% of its land.
Between 1912 and 2024, about 45 square kilometres of Yamuna floodplain got cut off by embankments.
Much of it turned into farmland and buildings.
The river's sandy islands β its natural pressure valves β shrank from 20 sq km in 1985 to just 4 sq km by 2020.
A river that once had room to breathe now has nowhere to go.
In 1978, floods released 20,076 cubic metres per second upstream β nearly double what hit Delhi in July 2023.
Yet 2023 saw the higher water level in the city.
Why?
Because a narrower, boxed-in river has nowhere left to spread.
Less water. Higher floods.
That's not a contradiction. That's the whole point of this study.
A river we spent two centuries shrinking is now the same river we blame every monsoon for flooding us.
