Miami, Florida – Omar Abdulkadir Artan, Somalia's acclaimed referee and Africa's best, was denied entry into the United States at Miami International Airport, despite possessing a diplomatic passport and being selected to officiate at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. Artan, who was traveling from Istanbul, was subsequently sent back, ending his aspirations to become the first Somali to referee a World Cup match. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed the denial, citing "vetting concerns" without providing further specifics.

The incident occurred just days before the tournament's commencement, sparking widespread disappointment within the global football community. Artan, named the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Men's Referee of the Year in 2025, was among 52 referees chosen by FIFA for the prestigious event co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. His selection was a significant milestone for Somali football and African officiating on the global stage.

According to reports, the Somali Embassy in Nairobi had issued Artan a diplomatic passport specifically to facilitate his travel after he encountered previous visa-related difficulties. However, U.S. immigration rules generally require diplomatic passport holders to be traveling on official government business, and his FIFA assignment reportedly did not meet this threshold for entry. Somalia has been on a U.S. travel ban list since June 2025, which imposes strict restrictions on its citizens, though exceptions can be made.

The denial of entry to Artan highlights broader challenges concerning U.S. immigration policies ahead of the World Cup. Similar issues have affected other nations, with Iranian athletes and officials reportedly facing visa rejections and travel complications. FIFA has since confirmed Artan's exclusion from the World Cup referee roster following the incident, stating he "will be unable to train and officiate."

Ciise Aden Abshir, a senior adviser to Somalia's Ministry of Youth and Sports, expressed dismay, stating, "Omar Artan is among Africa's most respected referees and deserves the support of the entire football community." He added that denying him entry harms not only Artan personally but also "undermines football’s commitment to fairness, merit and the spirit of fair play." Artan himself released a statement, saying, "Despite the circumstances, I am in a positive mood and I am focused on the next challenges in my refereeing career."
