Picture this.
A quiet town in north Kashmir. Apple orchards still wet with morning dew. Paddy fields stretching toward the mountains.
And suddenly⦠1,000 runners thundering through it.
That's the scene Baramulla is waking up to tomorrow.
It started with a failed run.
A group of friends in Baramulla decided to chase a full-moon night on foot. Zoon means moon in Kashmiri.
But the sky had other plans. It poured.
The run never happened β but the idea refused to leave their heads.
Years later, that one rained-out night has become ZoonRun β the first marathon ever organised outside Srinagar.
Two childhood friends β Chandeep Singh (a CA-turned-businessman and long-distance runner) and Tufail Anayat β pulled this off.
The numbers tell the story:
Top J&K athletes like Hans Raj, Yahya Khan and Bhushan Singh are in. Runners are flying in from outside the state.
This isn't a corporate marathon parachuted into a pretty location.
No big-city sponsors. No glossy out-of-town production house.
π Every single sponsor is a small businessman from Baramulla, Sopore and nearby villages.
The co-sponsor? Local. The volunteers? Local. The energy? Entirely homegrown.
"It is an effort by the community, for the community," Tufail says. And he means it literally.
For years, Kashmir's headlines have been written by conflict.
Tomorrow, the headline is sneakers on a village road.
Kids. Grandmothers waving from balconies. An amputee veteran refusing to sit out. Professional athletes running shoulder-to-shoulder with first-timers from Sopore.
Fitness as a rural movement, not an urban luxury.
Most movements start with a perfect plan.
This one started with a cancelled run on a rainy night⦠and two friends who wouldn't let the idea die.
That's how communities actually change.
Not with grand strategy.
But with someone who decides to lace up anyway.
That's all for now!
