Anthropic has launched a significantly redesigned desktop version of its AI coding assistant, Claude Code, focusing on parallel work capabilities and increased speed. The update aims to provide developers with a more integrated and efficient "full-fledged IDE experience," as detailed in official documentation and recent reports.
Felix Rieseberg, a prominent figure associated with the project, heralded the launch, stating in a tweet, > "Today is a big day! We're launching a ~ new ~ version of Claude Code in the desktop app. It's been redesigned from the ground up for parallel work and is a lot faster." He added that it had been his primary tool for weeks, underscoring its practical utility.
The new desktop application features a graphical interface that allows for running multiple sessions side-by-side, each with its own isolated Git worktree. This enables developers to tackle various tasks concurrently, such as debugging in one window while generating test cases in another. The interface also includes a customizable drag-and-drop layout, an integrated terminal, a file editor, and a visual diff review system.
Key enhancements include live app preview with dev servers, GitHub PR monitoring with auto-fix and auto-merge functionalities, and the introduction of "Routines." These routines transform Claude Code into a "cloud employee" that can execute tasks automatically based on scheduled triggers, API calls, or GitHub events, continuing work even when the user's computer is off. This feature is available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.
The overhaul, internally codenamed "Epitaxy," integrates dedicated panels for planning, task tracking by sub-agents, and reviewing code changes. This move positions Claude Code as a strong contender in the AI-powered development tool space, directly addressing long-standing limitations of single-session workflows and aiming to rival comprehensive developer environments.
