You're a visa holder in the US, everything's in order, your paperwork is pending... and you still might get handcuffed at your own domestic airport gate.
Sounds impossible.
It's happening.
Immigration attorneys across the country are sounding the same alarm this week:
Cancel your domestic flights.
Not international. Domestic.
Here's the twist that makes this story wild.
The system flagging these travelers is called Secure Flight.
It was built after 9/11.
To catch terrorists.
Now it's quietly being used to catch visa overstays instead.
Over 31,000 travelers flagged.
More than 800 arrested off the back of those tips.
This isn't about criminals evading justice.
Attorney Rajiv Khanna says many of those detained have:
Their crime? A visa that technically expired — even while a legal extension sits unresolved in a government queue.
Attorney Tsui H Yee put it simply.
"I never had to worry about clients flying domestically."
Not unless there was an outstanding deportation order.
But in the last two weeks alone, she's had clients detained landing on flights inside California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, and more.
Nine states so far.
Her advice now? Cancel the trip. Even if it sounds alarmist.
"Avoid domestic air travel unless absolutely necessary."
A pending adjustment of status doesn't shield you anymore.
Work authorization doesn't shield you anymore.
The rule used to be: follow the process, you're safe.
The rule now: even following the process isn't enough.
For thousands of visa holders quietly waiting on paperwork, boarding a flight home for the weekend just became a genuine legal gamble.
