That was the message traveler Shuchi Grover typed out from inside the terminal — phone in hand, plume of smoke filling the sky outside.
Within minutes, the videos were everywhere.
Flames. Thick smoke. San Francisco International Airport in the background.
Another user, @NerdBoogie, summed it up in five words:
👉 "Big fire in SFO at construction site."

The damage? Still unclear.
The cause? Unknown.
Here's the wild thing.
Despite the smoke being visible from inside the terminal…
flights are still moving.
No runway closures. No terminal evacuations. No groundings announced.
Which, honestly, is impressive.
Because SFO has had a rough year with fire scares already.
⚡ Back in April, a cargo pallet fire near the rental car center sent a similar plume of smoke into the sky.
⚡ Earlier this spring, crews battled a blaze at the United Airlines Technical Operations building on airport property.
And now this. Third major smoke event of the year.
Construction site fires are a different beast.
Lots of fuel. Lots of exposed material. Lots of ways for things to spread fast.
And SFO sits in one of the most densely-trafficked travel corridors in the U.S.
One shifted wind. One jumped spark. One delayed response.
That's all it takes to turn "no disruptions" into "thousands of stranded passengers."
Right now, SFO is holding the line.
Planes still landing. Passengers still boarding. Firefighters still working.

check your flight status before you leave for the airport.
