First Cabin International, a prominent Japanese capsule-hotel chain, has established its first U.S. outpost in Honolulu, Hawaii, offering budget-friendly accommodations near Waikiki Beach. The new hotel, located on the 14th floor of the Waikiki Business Plaza, presents a stark contrast to the area's typically high hotel prices, with single-occupancy pods starting at $60 per night while the average daily hotel room rate in Waikiki exceeded $280 in 2025.

The establishment, which opened in April 2025, aims to provide an affordable alternative for travelers and locals in the expensive Hawaiian market. Wall Street Journal travel columnist Dawn Gilbertson recently reviewed the facility, highlighting its compact, airline cabin-inspired pods. The hotel features various accommodation types, including premium-economy pods at 27 square feet, business class, and first-class cabins at 47 square feet, the latter offering enough space to stand.

First Cabin International's expansion into the U.S. is driven by a commitment to strengthening ties between Japan and Hawaii, and to attract Japanese tourists following pandemic-related declines. The $6 million project, inspired by the luxury and comfort of first-class air travel, provides amenities such as shared lounges with ocean views, shower rooms, and luggage storage. Guests noted the cleanliness and quiet environment, despite the communal facilities.

The concept introduces a new price point in a destination where traditional lodging can be prohibitive, targeting budget-conscious travelers who prioritize location over spacious private rooms. While the pods offer a secure and efficient sleeping environment, the experience is likened to an upscale hostel, with shared bathrooms and limited privacy. The hotel's strategic location, just minutes from Waikiki Beach, makes it an ideal base for exploring the area.
